Most of you know this from the movie A Walk to Remember. Mandy Moore made it famous. But not many realize it's a song by the band Switchfoot. The words of this song are just incredible. And the melody is amazing. I think it is a miracle when people put together magnificent words with a magnificent melody. How did they come up with those combinations of notes and rhythms? How did they choose those words so perfectly? I believe it is a gift. These guys have it.
Megan and I were fortunate to see Switchfoot perform at a club in Baltimore called Rams Head Live. It was back in March. Jon Foreman (lead singer) opened the show with the song Only Hope. Just him and an acoustic guitar. It was the best rendition of the song ever!
The following week Switchfoot posted the live performance as a free podcast. So I now have it on my iPod to enjoy for all time! And today, I found video footage of the same exact performance. Here are the lyrics:
There's a song that's inside of my soul
It's the one that I've tried to write over and over again
I'm awake in the infinite cold
But You sing to me over and over and over again
So I lay my head back down
And I lift my hands
and pray to be only Yours
I pray to be only Yours
I know now you're my only hope
Sing to me the song of the stars
Of Your galaxy dancing and laughing
and laughing again
When it feels like my dreams are so far
Sing to me of the plans that You have for me over again
